Hopi Pottery Symbols
Published in Paperback by Johnson Books (March, 1994)
Authors: Alex Patterson and Alexander M. Stephen
Average review score:

Excellent first printing of report from 1890. Important
In researching for another book, Patterson found reference to an unpublished manuscript of the Keams Collection. With much searching he found the text at the National Archives and the illustrations at the Smithsonian. After reassociating this material, this important primary information was finally published. Contains excellent information about the meaning of Hopi symbols.

The Hopi Way: Tales from a Vanishing Culture
Published in Paperback by Northland Pub (September, 1986)
Authors: Mando Sevillano, Mike Castro, and W. L. Satewa
Average review score:

Excellent collection of Hopi stories including modern tales
Excellent translation. Catches the feel of Hopi storytelling. One interesting story is a modern Coyote story- Coyote and the Black Snake. It has a pun with mild sexual innuendo- a common Hopi pattern- yet the pun only works in English!

Icarus and Aria
Published in Paperback by Renmen Publishing (01 October, 1997)
Author: Kirk Wood Bromley
Average review score:

Okay, I'm prejudiced...
But not really. I was in the play's July 2000 west coast premiere at Sacred Fools Theatre. This is a brillantly written show which updates the classic R&J story. But it's MORE than that. It serves up verse as in-depth as Shakespeare's, as poetic as Fry's, as beautiful as the sonnets, as magical as any fantasy. At the heart of the story is love, but at elliptical orbits around the story is a hard look at family, at new-found fame (and its attendant pressures), and at the courage that's required to follow your dreams. This is totally modern language...in gorgeous verse. If you wonder what it might have been like to be alive and reading Shakespeare's works a year or two after he wrote them, find out; buy this play.

In a Desert Garden: Love and Death Among the Insects
Published in Paperback by University of Arizona Press (April, 1999)
Authors: John Alcock and Turid Forsyth
Average review score:

Fabulous, witty, insightful
I thoroughly enjoyed this intersting, thought provoking book from John Alcock. His thoughts on the modern American lawn should be required reading in the suburbs. The world would be a better place if all would read and comprehend his thoughts on connecting ourselves to the myriad wonders that go on all around us every day.

The Insiders' Guide to Phoenix--1st Edition
Published in Paperback by Insiders' Publishing Inc. (July, 1999)
Authors: Debra Ross, Salvatore Caputo, and Debbie Ross
Average review score:

I enjoyed the historical facts & the personality close-ups.
This book was filled with wonderful descriptions of Phoenix personalities and I enjoyed the historical references peppered throughout the book. I live in Phoenix and it gave me some ideas for places to explore I haven't yet been to. The restaurant reviews were on target. I do suggest that it be updated each year as since publication a few of the restaurants have gone out of business. This is a good travel guide as it gives great ideas for activities that appeal to a broad range of interests. The insider tips were definitely a plus.

Journey Proud: Recollections of a Fifties Woman
Published in Hardcover by Oak Tree Press Inc. (September, 1999)
Authors: Claire K. Sargent and Claire King Sargent
Average review score:

If you want to be inspired, read this book!
Claire Sargent's journey from childhood to adulthood reads like a novel... entertaining, humorous, a real page-turner. She gives the inside dish on what it is REALLY like to run for political office, and what she had to endure during her 1992 campaign against John McCain. Reading "Journey Proud" made me proud to be a woman and I thank Ms. Sargent for letting us peek into her life as she paved the way for others to follow in her footsteps

Kachina Dolls: The Art of Hopi Carvers
Published in Paperback by University of Arizona Press (March, 1993)
Author: Helga Teiwes
Average review score:

In a word: OUTSTANDING!
Cecil Calnimptewa, Ronald Honyouti, Loren Phillips, Dennis Tewa and Wilmer Kaye ... they're all in this book, plus 22 other top Hopi carvers. Need I say more! Author/photographer Teiwes begins by tracing the life, history and religion of the Hopi and brings the reader to the doorstep of 1991 (the publication date). 24 color photos serve as the central focus of the book, but the final 63 pages which profile the 27 carvers is what really "makes" it. My copy is in paperback. I assume the hardback foremat is the same. Pick up a copy; you'll thoroughly enjoy it!!!

Kino Guide II: "Rim Edition"
Although the ordinary copies of this book have been long out of print (2001), a special edition was prepared of 100 copies on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Kino's arrival in the PimerĂa Alta. These books, internally labelled "Rim Edition," include a parchment page with the official postal stamp issued in honor of Padre Kino and inaugurated on March 12, 1987. These special copies were numbered, signed by the author, and cancelled in Cucurpe, Sonora, on the day of first issue 3/12/1987. This edition also contains four photographs of events that took place in celebration of the anniversary. At this writing (July, 2001), forty copies are all that remain. The price of this extremely rare and special edition is $...(US). The edition was inscribed as the "Rim Edition" because Kino had reached Cucurpe on that very date, and the historian Herbert Eugene Bolton coined the phrase: The Rim of Christendom to describe the launching of Kino's great explorations and missionary apostolate.
